Purpose: Orient you to what Dialogue is, how it's used today, and where to go for more detail on specific topics.
What Dialogue Is
Dialogue is Noodle's AI-powered conversational learning platform, built on the OpenAI Realtime models. Students interact with it through voice with an AI persona, a configured AI personality built for a specific course or use case.
A single Dialogue activity can involve voice, text-based feedback, and/or assignment submission, sometimes chained together into steps within one session.
How It's Used Today
- Conversational practice. Students work through course material by talking with a Dialogue AI persona.
- Feedback Coaching. Dialogue when chained together with a voice conversation, is used to provide feedback to students and ask deeper questions.
- Oral assessment. Dialogue is used as an oral assessment suite, evaluating students against a rubric.
For a fuller rundown of specific use cases, see the Use Cases Overview.
Instructor Visibility
Instructors can see the content of a student's Dialogue session. Sessions aren't private or anonymous from your side, and students should know that too (see the syllabus language below).
For assessment use cases, rubric-based scores go to the instructor. Students don't currently get their own summary view of that evaluation, though they can download their own transcript after submitting.
For guidance on actually using a score or transcript in a grading decision, see Interpreting Rubric Scores and Transcripts.
Guidance for Instructors
- Tell students instructors can see their session content. It affects how they should think about what they say, especially for graded use cases.
- If you're using Dialogue for assessment, be clear about what's scored. Since students don't yet see their own evaluation summary, plan how and when you'll share rubric feedback with them.
- If a student reports a technical issue, check the Faculty Troubleshooting guide before escalating.
- If you have questions about what a specific Dialogue setup does or doesn't do, check with your Noodle contact before telling students something you're not sure of. Capabilities vary by course configuration and are still evolving.

FAQ
Can students see their own evaluation results? Not yet as a built-in summary. For assessment use cases, rubric scores go to the instructor, who decides how and when to share feedback.
Does Dialogue grade automatically for every use case? No. It scores against a rubric for oral assessment use cases. Practice-only sessions aren't scored the same way; check with your Noodle contact for how a specific setup works.
Is Dialogue the same for every course? No. Dialogue AI Personas and setups are configured per course or institution, so what Dialogue does in one class may differ from another.
Can students redo a session if they mess up? Yes, students have unlimited attempts. Soon, instructors will have the ability to set the number of attempts.
Who do I contact with questions about a specific Dialogue setup? Your Noodle product contact.
